Nikon Monarch ATB Binoculars – Are All Terrain Binoculars a Better Choice?
By Richard J Morris

When choosing binoculars, have you ever wondered whether it would make any difference whether they were simply standard binoculars or tough ruggedized binoculars that withstand more extreme treatment? We are often caught up with trying to determine which magnification power and image quality will be best suited for our activities and overlook the importance of features that greatly extend a binoculars lifetime such as armoring and waterproofing.

All terrain binoculars are tougher ruggedized binoculars which have extra protection from harsh conditions and there are important reasons why they would be a better choice than standard binoculars that are not protected against the elements. In my estimation, all terrain binoculars are a better choice, whether you will be using them indoors or outdoors – it makes more sense to give them the best protection possible which will result in greatly extending their lifetime.

The extra protection provided by the following features make all terrain binoculars ideally suited to any activity:

  • Case Armor: All terrain binoculars usually have a tough rubber case armor that will protect them against damage when knocked around or dropped.

  • Waterproofing: Binoculars that are properly waterproofed can be used in any damp or wet environment and even submerged underwater without water getting inside the casing.
  • Fogproofing: The lenses on binoculars that are fogproofed will not fog up in damp conditions, ensuring that the image is clear and bright.
  • All terrain binoculars are not only well suited to harsh environments, but can be used anywhere and in any activity – and is definitely a better choice because the benefits of having the extra protection far outweigh those of ignoring it.
