I want to buy a powerful binoculars but don’t understand how to read their power ratings (50 x7, etc). Help!

There are several things to consider in a pair of binoculars.

1. the magnification power. That is noramlly the first number 6,7,8,10,12,15. Any binocular with a power greater than 10 is impossible to hold steady. That is: the image shakes. Many professionals recommend only 8 power as the highest to prevent shake. I do not have a problem with 10x but I can not hold 12x steady at all.

2. the diameter of the objective lens. This number is normally the second number 30, 40, 50 etc. This specifies the diameter in millameters of the objective lens. The larger the objective lens, the more light gathering ability. The most popular binoculars have 40 mm lenses. They are not too big or too heavy. Compact binoculars may have 20 mm lenses. They do have the advantage of being small and easy to cary. I used a pair of Pentax 10×20 for years.

3. This next item is not normally advertised except at internet sights specializing in binoculars. It is the eye relief. If you wear glasses. It is real important, because you do not want to have to remove your glasses to look through the binoculars. For eye glass wearers, at least 17 mm of eye relief.

4. field of view. This can be really important at times. The wider the field of view, the easier it is to find what you are looking through the binoculars. For example you see an airplane up in the sky. You put the binoculars up to your eyes, but you do not see the airplane anywhere in the view. Where is the darn thing anyway? With a wide field of view, you have a better chance of seeing it.

Now there are also specialized binoculars for astronomy. These are normally very powerful. 20x with very large objective lenses. 70 mm, 80 mm. They must be used with a tripod.

There are other considerations also. There are two types of binoculars on the market. Perro prism and roof prism. Perro’s are normally a little less expensive. Roof Prism are normally water proof and fog proof.

What are the best binoculars for whale watching in the Bay Area?

April 30th, 2010 -- Posted in binocular ratings | 8 Comments »

I have looked at the ratings on Consumer Reports, but I have no idea which one to choose for whale watching.

Some facts (I am not sure if these matter or not):
I have never been whale watching before and/or really used binoculars much.
I wear contacts and the strength is -2.75.
I would be watching in the Bay Area, so fog may be an issue.

Contacts are of no significance, I wear contacts too, used binoculars all through my military service.

Read this and then read the info on site.
Lots of choices out there. But first, a little nomenclature. Binoculars all come with a set of numbers: 7×35, 8×40, 10×60, that sort of thing. There’s other stuff going on—design, coatings, types of glass used—but in this price range the most important stats are those pairs of numbers. So, what do they mean? Think of the second number as the diameter of the lens—how wide it is. This affects how much light can go through the lens and hit your eye. A bigger number means a wider lens, letting more light through for a brighter image.

Yea, lots of fog in the San Francisco Bay area :>)
